Ο πρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ Ντόναλντ Τραμπ αναγνώρισε την Ιερουσαλήμ ως πρωτεύουσα του Ισραήλ και ανακοίνωσε ότι έδωσε εντολή στο State Department να ξεκινήσει τη διαδικασία μεταφοράς της αμερικανικής πρεσβείας από το Τελ Αβίβ όπου βρίσκεται.
Κατά την ανακοίνωση της απόφασης, πίσω από τον Ντόναλντ Τραμπ βρισκόταν ο αντιπρόεδρος Μάικ Πενς. Στην ομιλία του, ο αμερικανός πρόεδρος έκανε ιστορική αναδρομή στην ίδρυση του Ισραήλ και την πολιτική των προκατόχων του. Σε αυτό το πλαίσιο σημείωσε ότι η Ιερουσαλήμ είναι σήμερα η έφρα της κυβέρνησης του Ισραήλ, όπως και η έδρα του κοινοβουλίου και του Ανώτατου Δικαστηρίου.
Σύμφωνα με τον Ντόναλντ Τραμπ, οι ΗΠΑ παραμένουν βαθιά δεσμευμένες στην προσπάθεια για τη διευκόλυνση της ειρηνευτικής διαδικασίας, που θα αποδεχθούν τόσο οι Ισραηλινοί όσο και οι Παλαιστίνιοι.
“Η ανακοίνωσή μου σήμερα σηματοδοτεί την αρχή μιας νέας προσέγγισης της σύγκρουσης μεταξύ Ισραηλινών και Παλαιστινίων” ανέφερε.
“Θα κάνω ό,τι μπορώ για να βοηθήσω στη σφυρηλάτηση μιας τέτοιας συμφωνίας”, τόνισε, προσθέτοντας ότι οι ΗΠΑ θα στηρίξουν τη λύση των δύο κρατών, εάν συμφωνηθεί από τις δύο πλευρές.
“Εντός των επόμενων ημερών”, ο αντιπρόεδρος των ΗΠΑ Μάικ Πενς θα πραγματοποιήσει περιοδεία σε χώρες της Μέσης Ανατολής.
Ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ ζήτησε “αμοιβαία κατανόηση και σεβασμό” όλων των εμπλεκομένων. Επίσης, κάλεσε όλες τις πλευρές να δείξουν “ηρεμία”ώστε να επικρατήσουν οι μετριοπαθείς έναντι αυτών που κηρύσσουν το μίσος. Πάντως αρνήθηκε ότι με την απόφασή του παίρνει θέση σε θέματα που αφορούν το τελικό καθεστώς, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των “διαφιλονικούμενων συνόρων. Αυτά τα ζητήματα άπτονατι στα εμπλεκόμενα μέλη”.
“Ο Θεός να ευλογεί το Ισραήλ, τους Παλαιστίνιους και τις ΗΠΑ”, κατέληξε.
